What is MAGI Adult Program?
MAGI, which stands for Modified Adjusted Gross Income, is a way of calculating income for the purposes of determining eligibility for certain government programs, including Medicaid and CHIP. For Medicaid, MAGI is used to determine whether an individual or family is eligible for premium assistance or cost-sharing reductions.
Under MAGI, income is calculated by taking the household’s adjusted gross income (AGI) and adding back certain deductions and exclusions. This includes things like student loan interest, alimony payments, and certain types of income that are not taxed.
The MAGI Adult Program is a Medicaid program that is available to adults who have incomes that are too high to qualify for traditional Medicaid, but who are still below the poverty level. To be eligible for the MAGI Adult Program, an individual must meet the following criteria:
Be between the ages of 19 and 64.
Have an income that is below 138% of the federal poverty level (FPL).
Meet the citizenship or immigration status requirements for Medicaid.
Not be eligible for other types of health insurance, such as employer-sponsored insurance or Medicare.
The MAGI Adult Program provides a number of benefits, including:
Coverage for doctor visits, hospital stays, and other medical services.
Prescription drug coverage.
Dental and vision care.
Mental health and substance abuse treatment.
If you think you may be eligible for the MAGI Adult Program, you should contact your state Medicaid agency to apply. You can find your state Medicaid agency’s contact information on the Medicaid website.
