ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment: How to Find Health Insurance Plans During the ACA Open Season

What is the Open Season?

The Open Season is a yearly opportunity for individuals and families to purchase health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace. It is the only time of the year when anyone can enroll in or change health coverage through the Marketplace, unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Open Season runs from November 1 through January 15.

How to Shop the Marketplace

There are three ways to shop for health insurance through the Marketplace:

Online: Visit HealthCare.gov to create an account and compare plans.
By phone: Call (800) 318-2596 (TTY: 711).
In-person: Contact a local health insurance agent or assister to help you find a plan.

What to Consider When Shopping for a Plan

When shopping for a health insurance plan, it is important to consider the following factors:

Your budget: How much can you afford to spend on a monthly premium?
Your health care needs: Do you have any specific health conditions that require coverage?
Your preferred doctors and hospitals: Do you want to be able to see specific doctors or hospitals?
Your location: Some plans are only available in certain areas.

Special Enrollment Periods

If you miss the Open Season, you may still be able to enroll in or change health coverage through the Marketplace if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Special Enrollment Periods are available for people who have experienced certain life events, such as losing job-based health coverage, getting married, or having a baby.
