ACA: What Healthcare Services Are Covered?
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has expanded access to healthcare coverage for millions of Americans. One of the key components of the ACA is the expansion of essential health benefits (EHBs). EHBs are a set of ten categories of health care services that must be covered by all health insurance plans offered on the Health Insurance Marketplace.
The ten EHBs are:
Ambulatory patient services (outpatient care)
Emergency services
Hospitalization
Maternity and newborn care
Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment
Prescription drugs
Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
Laboratory services
Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
Pediatric services, including oral and vision care
In addition to these ten EHBs, some states have added additional benefits to their Medicaid programs. These benefits may include dental care, vision care, and long-term care.
What Services Are Not Covered by ACA?
Not all health care services are covered by the ACA. Some services, such as cosmetic surgery and elective procedures, are not considered essential health benefits and are therefore not covered by most health insurance plans.
