How to Get Health Insurance Coverage for Low-Income Individuals
If you’re struggling to afford health insurance, there are a few options available to you.
Medicaid
Medicaid is a government health insurance program for low-income individuals and families. To qualify for Medicaid, you must meet certain income and asset requirements. The income limit for Medicaid varies from state to state, but in general, you must have an income below 138% of the federal poverty level. In Virginia, the income limit for Medicaid is $1467 per month.
To apply for Medicaid, you can contact your state’s Medicaid agency or visit the HealthCare.gov website.
ACA Health Insurance Marketplace
The ACA Health Insurance Marketplace is a website where you can shop for and compare health insurance plans. If you qualify for a subsidy, you can get help paying for your premiums. To qualify for a subsidy, you must have an income between 138% and 400% of the federal poverty level. If you have income above 400% of the poverty level, you can still purchase a health plan through the Marketplace.
To apply for health insurance through the Marketplace, you can visit the HealthCare.gov website or contact a licensed health insurance agent or broker.
Catastrophic Health Insurance
Catastrophic health insurance is a type of health insurance that has a high deductible but a lower premium. Catastrophic health insurance plans are only available to people under 30 years old or people who have a hardship exemption. If you qualify for a hardship exemption, you must have a qualifying life event, such as losing your job or getting married.
To apply for catastrophic health insurance, you can visit the HealthCare.gov website or contact a licensed health insurance agent or broker.
Other Options
If you don’t qualify for Medicaid or the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace, there are a few other options available to you. You can purchase a health insurance plan directly from an insurance company. You may also be able to get health insurance through your employer or union.
