What is MAGI and How Does it Affect Your ACA Eligibility?

If you’re self-employed, determining your eligibility for affordable health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) can be confusing. One factor that plays a significant role is your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI).

MAGI and Net Income
MAGI is a measure of your income used to determine your eligibility for various government programs, including subsidies for ACA health insurance. It is similar to your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), but with some key differences. For self-employed individuals, MAGI includes your business net income plus any other income from sources such as investments or wages.

Self-Employment Premiums and MAGI
Here’s where it gets tricky for self-employed individuals. Health insurance premiums you pay for yourself are deductible from your gross income, reducing your MAGI. However, this deduction can sometimes create a circular problem, as lower MAGI due to premium deduction may disqualify you from subsidies.

MAGI and ACA Eligibility
ACA subsidies are available to individuals and families with incomes below certain thresholds. For 2023, the maximum income limit for full subsidies is 150% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), which is approximately $23,340 for an individual.

So, which income figure determines your eligibility for ACA?
It’s MAGI. If your MAGI exceeds the maximum limit, you may not be eligible for any subsidies. However, if you estimate that your MAGI will be close to the cutoff, you can still apply for insurance through the Marketplace and select a plan that fits your budget.

What if your Income Changes?
If your income changes significantly during the year, you may need to update your Marketplace application. If your income increases and you no longer qualify for subsidies, you may have to pay back some or all of the subsidies you received.

Seeking Professional Help
Determining your ACA eligibility and selecting the right health plan can be complex. It’s highly recommended to consult with a licensed agent who specializes in health insurance. They can help you assess your specific situation and find the best options for your needs.
