Your fiancé is eligible for her parents’ insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) until she turns 26. However, if she enrolls in her own ACA plan, she may lose eligibility to enroll in her parents’ plan in the future.

What is the ACA?

The ACA, also known as Obamacare, is a health care law that was signed into law in 2010. The ACA has many provisions, including one that allows young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance plans until they turn 26.

How Does the ACA Work for Young Adults?

Under the ACA, young adults can stay on their parents’ health insurance plans until they turn 26, even if they are not living at home, are married, or have children. This is true even if the young adult has their own job and health insurance.

What Happens if You Lose Your ACA Coverage?

If you lose your ACA coverage, you may be able to get it back. You can enroll in a new ACA plan during the next open enrollment period. The open enrollment period for 2024 is from November 1, 2023 to January 15, 2024.

You may also be able to get ACA coverage through a special enrollment period. Special enrollment periods are available if you have lost your health insurance, moved to a new area, or had a change in your income.

If you lose your ACA coverage, you should contact a licensed agent to see if you are eligible for a special enrollment period. You can also contact the Health Insurance Marketplace at 1-800-318-2596.
