Losing health insurance? Here’s what you need to know about qualifying events

Losing health insurance can be a stressful experience, but it’s important to know that you have options. If you lose your health insurance, you may be eligible for a special enrollment period (SEP). An SEP is a time when you can enroll in a health insurance plan outside of the Open Enrollment Period.

Qualifying events for a Special Enrollment Period

There are many different events that can qualify you for an SEP. Losing your job, getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new state are all considered qualifying events. In this case, being kicked off a parent’s plan is also a qualifying event.

How to enroll in a health insurance plan during an SEP

If you have a qualifying event, you can enroll in a health insurance plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace or directly through an insurance company. To enroll through the Marketplace, you can visit HealthCare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596.

If you enroll in a health insurance plan through the Marketplace, you may be eligible for financial assistance to help you pay for your premiums. You can learn more about financial assistance at HealthCare.gov.

What if I don’t have a qualifying event?

If you don’t have a qualifying event, you can still enroll in a health insurance plan during the Open Enrollment Period. The Open Enrollment Period for 2023 coverage runs from November 1, 2022 to January 15, 2023.

If you miss the Open Enrollment Period, you may be able to enroll in a health insurance plan through a special enrollment period. However, you will need to have a qualifying event to qualify for an SEP.

Losing health insurance can be a stressful experience, but it’s important to know that you have options. If you lose your health insurance, you may be eligible for a special enrollment period. You can learn more about SEPs and how to enroll in a health insurance plan at HealthCare.gov.
