Why Many Uninsured People Can’t Afford ACA Health Insurance
Since the health care law – Affordable Care Act(ACA) passed in 2010, a lot of things have changed to help people with health insurance coverage. However, there’s still a total of 27.5 million people in the country who are uninsured.
According to a new analysis by the Commonwealth Fund, an increase in federal funding is needed. The Commonwealth Fund analysis found that expanding subsidies for health insurance would cut the number of uninsured Americans by one-third.
Other key findings of the report include:
– The majority of uninsured Americans have low incomes.
– High out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles and copays, are also a barrier to coverage.
– People of color are more likely to be uninsured than white people.
There are a number of reasons why so many people can’t afford health insurance, even with the subsidies that are available.
– 12 states have not expanded Medicaid under the ACA. This expansion was made available to ensure health insurance coverage for low-income adults. Those living in non-expansion states earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but little to buy a plan on the marketplace.
– The cost of health insurance premiums has been rising faster than wages. It has made it difficult for many people to afford coverage, even with the subsidies that are available.
– Deductibles and copays have also been increasing. This has made it more difficult for people to afford the care that they need.
There are a number of things that can be done to make health insurance more affordable for more people. For example:
– Congress could increase funding for subsidies.
– States could expand Medicaid.
– Health insurance companies could lower premiums and deductibles.
If you are one of the millions of Americans who are uninsured, you should know that there are options available to help you get coverage. Please seek help from a licensed insurance agent in your area who can help you explore your options.
